Care for the Sick
OPEN M operates the only free medical clinic in the city of Akron and serves all of Summit County.
This year is proving very exciting for the OPEN M Free Clinic. In addition to the great news of providing services to those who otherwise would not have access to medical care, construction to expand the clinic facility is well underway. When the 1,400 square-foot expansion is complete, the clinic will have two new exam rooms, a doctor's office and consultation rooms. Moreover, the pharmacy will be three times the size of the existing pharmacy!
The changes outlined above are needed to keep pace with the volume of patients seen by the clinic. The need for our services is ever-present and growing. We now have more than 700 patients using the OPEN M Free Clinic as their primary care institution.
In 2005, a total of 177 new patients were enrolled, while frewer than half that number graduated to public or private insurance. Over the corse of they year, the clinic proivded 2,942 office visits for general medical care a well as specialized care. Specialties represented by OPEN M volunteer physicians include cardiology, pulmonology, endocrinology, pediatrics, psychiatry, podiatry and others.
Last year, the OPEN M pharmacy provided 8,176 prescriptions valued at $932,898. This means that each patient received an average of $317 in life-saving drugs at each visit.
